THE INTRUSION OF THE CROSS

The message of the cross is the message of an intrusion. Unwelcomed by a world which covets privacy, the holy cross only gets in the way.

It intrudes upon our calendars already well marked with our personal priorities.  It refuses to fit nicely into people's plans.

The message of the cross will not harmonize with the images and popular virtues of the hour.  It is a message intolerant of man's best and intolerable to those investing in the wisdom of the world.

The cross is an intruder.  It gets in the way.

         And that is its glory.

That God, in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, intruded into our ruined world.  He asked from us no permission to implement His own plan of salvation and complete the work of redemption by Calvary's cross.

God plunged ahead into the sheer folly of giving life away by offering His death for our life and salvation.

The cross --- God's masterful triumph.  The cross of Christ --- recognized and known not by a critical examination of it, but by being saved and being called by it.

1 Corinthians 1:18-24

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,

"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart."

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.  For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Please keep the Roth family in your prayers.  Sue said that both Gary's father and her mother failed heart stress tests on the same day.  Gary's dad, Herman is scheduled for open heart surgery this coming Monday, and Sue's mom, Evelyn, is waiting on results from a heart cath.  When such concerns come in such unpredictable ways, we call upon the Word of our Lord who is reliable, strong, and wise.  The wisdom and love of Christ sustain the children of God.
